Es Devlin
The London-based artist and designer Es Devlin works in a range of media, often mapping light and projected film onto kinetic sculptural forms. Her practice began in narrative theatre and experimental opera and she has made lyric stage sculptures in collaboration with Beyoncé, Kanye West, U2, The Weeknd and Adele.
Her solo sculptural work explores machine-learning and collective poetry, most recently Forest for Change (Somerset House), The Poem Pavillion (Expo 2020), Mask (Somerset House), Memory Palace (Pitzhanger), Please Feed the Lions (Trafalgar Square), PoemPortraits (Serpentine Gallery), and The Singing Tree (the V&A Museum). Large-scale explorations of labyrinth and map geometries include Room 2022 (Miami Art Basel, 2017) and EGG (the XI Gallery in New York).
Her current productions include Coriolanus at the National Theatre and the West End return of The Lehman Trilogy at the Gillian Lynne Theatre.
Her recent theatre includes: The Motive and the Cue (National Theatre and West End), Dear England (National Theatre and West End), The Crucible (National Theatre and West End), Boris Godunov (La Scala), A Number (Old Vic), The Lehman Trilogy (West End and Broadway), The Hunt (Almeida and Broadway), Hamlet (Barbican), Chimerica (Almeida, Harold Pinter Theatre), The Nether (Royal Court, Duke of Yorks).
Her opera work includes Carmen (Bregenz), Otello (The Met) and Don Giovanni (Royal Opera House).
Her practice was the subject of the Netflix documentary series Abstract: The Art of Design, and her talks include Ted 2019.
She has been awarded three Olivier Awards, a Tony, a UAL fellowship, was made OBE in 2015 and is the Artistic Director of the London Biennale.
