Marianne Elliott
Marianne's debut film The Salt Path starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this year.
Her recent theatre work was the West End premiere of Mike Bartlett’s play Cock, staring Jonathan Bailey at The Ambassadors Theatre, and the award-winning revival of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman (co-directed with Miranda Cromwell) at the Young Vic Theatre and then the Piccadilly Theatre in the West End, where it won the Olivier Award for Best Director of a Play. Prior to that, Elliott’s directing credits for Elliott & Harper Productions include the award-winning Broadway transfer of Stephen Sondheim and George
Furth’s Company at the Bernard Jacobs Theatre (winner of 5 Tony awards including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Director of a Musical). This production originated in the West End at the Gielgud Theatre where it won 4 Olivier Awards (including Best Revival of a
Musical) as well as the Evening Standard Award for Best Director of a Musical. Marianne’s first show for Elliott & Harper was the West End premiere of Simon Stephens’ play Heisenberg at Wyndhams Theatre.
Prior to forming Elliott & Harper Productions, Marianne was an Associate Director at the National Theatre for over ten years. Her final production for the NT was a revival of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America which transferred to Broadway in March 2018 where it won 3
Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play. Marianne's s other productions for the National Theatre include War Horse which she co-
directed with Tom Morris (West End and Broadway transfers; winner of the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play); The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night- Time (also West End and Broadway; Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Director and Best New Play; South Bank Sky Arts Award). Other plays at the National Theatre include Husbands & Sons (a co-production with the Royal Exchange), Rules for Living, The Light Princess, Port, Season’s Greetings, Women Beware Women, All’s Well That Ends Well, Mrs Affleck, Harper Regan, Saint Joan (Olivier Award for Best Revival, South Bank Show Award), Thérèse Raquin and Pillars of the Community (Evening Standard Best Director Award).
Marianne was an Associate Director at the Royal Court, where her productions included Stoning Mary, Notes on Falling Leaves, The Sugar Syndrome and Local.
Previously Marianne was an Artistic Director of the Royal Exchange where she directed Port, Design for Living, Les Blancs, As You Like It, A Woman of No Importance, Nude with Violin, Fast Food, Martin Yesterday, Deep Blue Sea, Mad for It, Poor Superman and I Have Been Here Before. Other theatre includes Sweet Bird of Youth at the Old Vic; Much Ado About Nothing for the RSC; and The Little Foxes at the Donmar Warehouse.
In 2020, Marianne directed two episodes of Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads for the BBC, starring Tamsin Greig and Harriet Walter.
In 2023, Marianne will make her feature film debut directing The Salt Path, an adaptation by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, of Raynor Winn’s best-selling book.
Marianne Elliott is the only woman to have won 3 Tony Awards for Best Direction. In 2018, she was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for her Services to Theatre.
